Fantastic Images

Well, we have about one month left! I hope you have been having a restful and productive summer.

Please check out this Polish Surrealist Artist! I want to thank Ryan D. for sending me this link. The images are both beautiful and disturbing, right in line with the concept of Surrealism. Click here to see 28 of this artists fantastic paintings!

Here is the translation for the text on this site.

Jacek Yerka is an artist born in Torun, Poland, whose showy works combine surrealism and fantasy, the hand of a naive and almost childlike style. Crayons and acrylic paint are the preferred materials. Passionate about the details, Jacek confesses that for him the early '50s was a golden age, and for that reason probably choose to transform technological devices with rustic and pastoral.

AP Students: You should be about half way through your summer assignments. If you are not - !!!!!! Assignments do NOT have to be sophisticated work! They do NOT have to be large! They just have to be done. There are 7 assignments, 60 drawings, 1 blog, comment, explore AP site, 2 concentration assignments, 1 art event assignment, 1 principles of design assignment. Can't wait to see them and share.

I have a question about organizing the drawings. :) Should they be organized chronologically, or based on the drawing subject (such as figures, portraits, etc.)?

Hi Victoria,
You can organize your assignments either way you like. I would like the organization to make sense to you. You could also use sticky note tabs when you pass them in. You can section them off with notes on the tabs so that I can find assignments fast. That way you can take the sticky note off of the pages once I have taken a look. Its also a way to keep track of what you have done. The assignment says "pass them in IN ORDER" That means a logical order NOT the exact order that the list is in.

One more thing - don't labor too much over these drawings. At least 2/3's of them should be fun and fast! Don't try to make everything perfect and complete....be loose, have some fun.

The Surreal Artist Jack Yerka is awesome! I took a look at the rest of his work on the link as well. I especially love the one of the house with the moon behind it and space in the background. His work is defiantly inspiring!! The specific painting you posted makes me want to jump right in and wonder around the forest, peaking through the tree tunnels of light to see what lies inside!! It's like a world of mystery!!

Love your observations Angel. Im not really a fan of Surrealism but this work is stunning! Each one makes my mind wonder all over the painting as well as all over ideas.

This painting is absolutely amazing. One of the things I love about surrealism is how it makes things that we could only imagine in our dreams come to life. Like Angel said, I would love to explore this dreamlike forest, explore the insides of the tree's and find where the light comes from. It is truely a "Fantastic Image".

Great comment Gabby.
Keep this in mind: even though these are fantastic images, I am positive that if you could talk to the artist they would tell you that the image they had in mind was even MORE fantastic than the painting. Im saying that because your creative mind is so much more powerful than any image or work you create AND that is one of the reasons artists keep creating....to make an image as close as possible to what is in his/her head. However, it is ALSO the same reason people give up! Because they CANNOT seem to make things they way they see them in their heads! Choose to be inspired to get better instead of giving up. The reward will be worth it.

I checked out some more of Jacek Yerka's work. It's really impresive! The paintings remind me of a calendar that was in our house a few years ago--except Jacek's paintings are much more sophisticated and interesting. If I had to choose a favorite from the 28 images on the website, it would probably be the 14th image. I love the way the moon was made, and the blending in the sky is beautiful. It's also neat how some planets were included as well. Thank you for introducing me to an amazing artist! :D

I love this picture because it feels so real. It's beautiful and captures my attention. The minute I looked at it, I couldn't look away. There's so much warmth coming from the lights that surround the trees and the forest. I love this kind of art, surrealism, because it's so playful and different, and it's never boring. There's so much movement throughout the picture that my eyes just wander to every single inch possible. When I look at the painting, I already have a million questions. All of his other pictures are amazing also. He makes them feel so real, like you're there, in the painting, seeing it right before your eyes. Like you can reach out and touch the tree branches, or the waves of the water he paints.

Well, judging by the posts I guess Surrealism is a style we need to look into this coming year. As I said before, its not my favorite style but these paintings are very very interesting both conceptually and technically. If anyone finds a Surrealist Artist they like a lot, start sharing the links here! I also added a styles folder to the youtube channel. There are three Surrealist Art Videos in there already. Including this one! Enjoy.

Actually, I know of a great painter who does both realistic and surreal paintings using palette knives. Here's his website. http://www.afremov.com/
I hope you enjoy his work as much as I do. :D

Love the work Victoria. It reminds me of stained glass! Beautiful. I don't think it fits into the Surrealist style though. Abstract Expressionism, Expressionism perhaps or even abstraction. In order for Surrealism to create that signature uneasy feel it needs to look possible even when it is not. "Realistic images in a dreamlike environment or atmosphere." That is the short definition of Surrealism. Afremov is fanciful yes, expressive, yes, realistic, no. Do you see what I mean?

Victoria said...

Yeah, that makes sense. :)
Oh, I have a few questions about the principle assignment. Can the 5 drawings be abstract, or do they have to be realistic? Also, does the subject have to be from the lists we made, or can it be entirely different?

D. A. Bickford said...

Principles Assignment:
- yes, the 5 drawings can be abstracted
- no, you do not have to use something from your list

I suggest that you try a subject that speaks to you, something that lets you get lots of ideas. Don't worry about weather or not you LOVE the images you create just concentrate of the idea you are working with. For example: in the Mondrian tree series, at first you can really see the tree form influence but, by the end, unless you KNOW already that it was a tree that he was inspired by you might not know that by looking at the image. Instead, his image has a series of lines that relate to each other LIKE the lines of a tree without making a "typical tree" drawing. Instead, he concentrates on the design principle Rhythm and uses the repeated lines of the trees as a design element. He proves that he understands how the concept of rhythm can be used abstractly to create the feel of the city in the final Primary Colors art work. Watch that section on the video again, pick a subject and then pick one or two design principles that express your subject then have fun with mark making and self expression of the concept.
