Youth Art Month 2013

Y.A.M. At Westbrook High School
Maggie Harnois - Sr. Portrait, Acrylic
March has been a busy month for Art at Westbrook High School. Yes, we enjoyed the annual reception of student art at Portland Museum of Art and Maggie Harnois's beautiful portrait of a graduate in a Mortar Board and Gown as well as Kim Larlee's Hand Colored Portrait Photo. The exhibition looked spectacular in the gallery space. We are so fortunate to be able to honor student work in this space.

"THE SIMBA SHOW” Every year my upper level students do a small fundraiser. The money goes back to the students in the form of The Artist and Craftsman Supply gift cards. Students enter works for local judging by students and faculty in a variety of categories. Our fundraiser uses the “Kickstarter” model. Now the story gets kind of, um, well, kind of bizarre but also kind of touching. You see, we have this cat.....yes, a real cat. His name is Simba. He belongs to a neighborhood family but he spends almost every day at our school. EVERYONE knows him and everyone takes care of him. He wanders in and out of the building at will, sort of a self appointed school mascot. This year our fundraiser is all about Simba. Simba cards, Simba Art we even have a Simba Video. We will be having a “Simba Art” reception at our central office to honor our beloved Simba this month. Channel 8 News came and did spot for us on Simba - they "broke the story"! Thank you Steve Minich! Here is the link.

UPDATE: The Bangor Daily News also did a spread on the story. Front page top leader photo. Here is the link.

Caroline Cornish did a spot too: Here is the link.
